The Fountain in front of City Hall is a lovely centerpiece to the Courtyard of the Historic Courthouse. Located at 101 N. Court Street. This is the third building that sits on the site, the original was a wooden structure, which was replaced by a brick structure in 1784. In 1861 the building was burned by what was believed to be arson. The water had been turned off so that the citizens could only watch as the building burned down. It is believed to be in protest by a successionist over the lack of a vote by the Maryland General Assembly to succeed.

When the fire happened in 1861, why was the water turned off?, maybe the answer can be found on the City of Frederick Maryland's website?
